Annual green bond issuance approaches 400bn dollars

According to BloombergNEF data, new corporate and government green bond issuance rose by a record nearly 80.1bn dollars in September, bringing the year-to-date total to 391.9bn dollars. That far exceeds annual totals since 2017. The four biggest months of issuance have come at the end of quarters, including September 2020 and 2021, June 2021 and March 2021.

Issuers are borrowing heavily at the moment, motivated by reporting deadlines. Proceeds from green bonds are used to finance eligible environmental activities.
